Citizen's Police Academy
BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION
The academy gives our citizens first-hand information on how and why the Department operates, and examining the culture of police work and the organization. It provides an excellent opportunity for the citizens to interact with Department members. The program first started under the direction of Sheriff John Moran in 1991. The program has become one of the most popular, and we now have a waiting list. The Citizens' Police Academy has had over 1,900 graduates from the program and look forward to even more of our outstanding citizens participating in this program in the years to come.
The Citizens’ Academy is NOT an offer of employment, but a volunteer organization and program to educate those respected members of our community who want to hear information on law enforcement and the LVMPD right from the source.
Upon graduation, participants can become members of the Citizens' Police Academy Alumni Association. The association meets once a month, on the third (3rd) Thursday of each month where they will have guest speakers from various law enforcement/legal agencies. The association also conducts special tours periodically during the year. Membership in the association includes a monthly newsletter keeping them updated on LVMPD events.
If you are interested in attending the Citizens' Police Academy, complete the application on-line and we will place your name on the list. The academy will be held at the LVMPD Training Center located at 861 N. Mojave Road, Las Vegas, NV 89101(corner of Mojave and Washington).
The Citizens’ Police Academy (CPA) is a 12-week program which gives our community members first-hand information on the role of police officers in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). The students meet every Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The program involves both classroom and interactive instruction. Participants are given the same information that our police recruits and officers receive.

- • Overview of the Legal System - Criminal/Constitutional Law
- • The World of a Patrol Officer
- • Gangs - Dangerous Drugs
- • Domestic Violence
- • Firearms Training
- • SWAT and K-9 Demonstrations
- • Air Support – Homicide
- • Use of Force
- • Traffic/DWI Enforcement
- • Clark County Detention Center Tour
- • Fraud/Identity Theft
Participants will also have the opportunity to sit-a-long with our Communications Bureau (9-1-1 and Dispatch) and do a ride-a-long with an officer so you can see first-hand what a day in the life of our dispatchers and officers are like.
