COMMITMENT TO A QUALITY WORKFORCE

Mission: The mission of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is to protect the community through prevention, partnership, and professional service. Recruiting, hiring and training qualified and diverse individuals to serve the Las Vegas community are central to the successful achievement of this mission. The Human Resources Division is tasked with providing fair and unbiased recruitment, selection, background, and training systems that encourage the best local and out-of-state applicants to apply for, and secure, positions with the LVMPD.

Department Values

The LVMPD's values are the behavioral standards that our members must exhibit both on and off duty. The values of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are:

  • Integrity (Exhibits ethical behavior, is honest, maintains trust and confidentiality, keeps commitments, sets a good example..........)
  • Courage (Stands up for what he/she believes in, does the right thing, supports others, is flexible, adapts to change........)
  • Accountability (Takes responsibility for actions, "owns" the decision, shows initiative, admits mistakes, is self-directed.....)
  • Respect for others (Builds confidence, provides resources, appreciates differences, provides recognition, is a team player......)
  • Excellence (Exhibits a positive and professional attitude, shows respect for learning, has pride in work, exhibits high standards, values creativity, has an open mind.....)

SYSTEMS APPROACH TO EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING

The Personnel and Training Bureaus have designed a systems approach to employment and training. Hiring qualified candidates can only be accomplished if qualified applicants are encouraged to work for the LVMPD. The effort to recruit a qualified workforce is the responsibility of every LVMPD employee. Additionally, the LVMPD calls upon community leaders, agencies and interest groups to support this employment effort. The Personnel Bureau has literature that is available to anyone interested in employment with the LVMPD. Potential applicants are also encouraged to visit www.protectthecity.com for additional information about the LVMPD and employment.

The Personnel Bureau consists of various sections that specialize in different aspects of the recruiting, selecting, and hiring processes. The sections are as follows:

Recruiting Section – With the assistance of the community, the LVMPD encourages applicants to prepare for a career in law enforcement. Recruiters hold symposiums, visit special interest groups, conduct employment seminars, conduct fitness preparation sessions, and meet one-on-one with potential applicants. Men and women interested in law enforcement are encouraged to visit with recruiters who will explain their career options and answer questions. For those not interested in becoming an officer, there are a variety of civilian positions as well. Job descriptions and minimum qualifications are also listed on this website for more information.

Selection and Classification Section – This Section handles a variety of selection and classification-related tasks, to include conducting job analyses, developing new classifications, developing and administering testing processes, posting job announcements, screening applications, and creating eligibility lists for hire, transfer and promotion.

Candidate Management Team – This Team handles the employment processing of new employees, and tracking of personnel movement throughout the LVMPD.

Background Section - This Section conducts background investigations and polygraphs on candidates who have completed the selection process and been placed on an eligibility list as positions are authorized to be filled.

The Training Bureau consists of various sections that specialize in different aspects of training. The Training Bureau administers the Police Recruit Academies, while the Detention Services Division Training Section administers the Corrections Recruit Academies. Both are also responsible for in-service training provided to current employees on various and relevant topics.
