DETECTIVE LISA FLAHIVE
L.V.M.P.D. Police Employees Assistance Program
Peer Counselor / Coordinator

Biography

Lisa was hired as a Police Officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 1994.  She spent her first seven years in various patrol assignments,  including two years as a Field Training Officer.

One of the events that forever changed her life was the death of her only sibling, her brother Officer Scott Flahive of the Grand Haven (Michigan) Department of Public Safety. He was shot and killed in the line of duty on December 13, 1994 while Lisa was still in Metro’s academy.  Unsure if she still wanted to work in patrol, she graduated, and continued on in the program. Further along in her grief journey she grew to love patrol, despite the dangers. In July 2001 she joined the P.E.A.P. staff as a Peer Counselor to help others survive the obstacles in their lives.

Lisa’s goal is to not only  respond to employees after crisis situations but to work proactively and to help educate before critical incidents happen.   She  is a Nevada P.O.S.T. certified instructor who enjoys teaching about critical incidents, traumatic stress and surviving a career in law enforcement.  In 2002 she was awarded co-winner of the Training Wheel’s Quill Award for writer of the year.

She is the current president of the Nevada chapter of  Concerns of Police Survivors, an organization to help family members of officers killed in the line of duty.  Lisa  is completing her Certificate of Death and Grief Studies at the Center For Loss and Life Transition in Ft. Collins, CO.

Lisa holds a B.F.A. from Michigan State University in Studio Art.   She renews her energy by hiking and painting the mountains and canyons of the west. In her younger days she was a competitive bicycle racer.  She still thinks she can ride but it has been a while since she won a race.
