Frequently Asked Questions


• I need fingerprints taken. What is required and what is the cost?
  • • Fingerprint Cards are $14.00 for up to 4 cards.  Additional cards will be $14.00 for each set of up to 4 cards--CASH ONLY
  • • One form of photo ID is required. We do not accept expired identification.
  • • We DO NOT ink print.  All cards are printed from our LiveScan fingerprint capture stations.
 • How do I obtain a work card?
  • • Obtain a work card application from your prospective employer. Follow the instructions on the back of the work card application
  • • Fill out both sides completely to the best of your knowledge
  • • Ensure your employer signed the work card application
 • Are sheriff cards the same as a work card?
  • • Yes, they are the same
 • Why am I required to have a work card?
  • • City and County ordinances and the Nevada Revised Statutes dictate that certain employment positions require work cards
 • Can I get a work card before I have a job?
  • • No, you must first obtain employment.  Your prospective employer will provide you with a work card application
 • What is the fee for a work card?
  • • Non-gaming work cards cost $40.00--cash only
  • • Entertainers work cards for City clubs are $77.50--cash only--national background check is required.
  • • Entertainers work cards for County clubs are $40.00--cash only--local background check is required
  • • Child Care cards are $77.50--cash only--national background check required
 • When does my work card expire?
  • • All work cards are valid for 5 years from the date of issuance.
 • How do I obtain a work card to work as a private security guard or a private investigator?
  • • LVMPD no longer issues work cards for private security or private investigators.  
  • • Contact your prospective employer or the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board for further information at (702) 486-3003 or visit their website athttp://nevadapilb.glsuite.us.  
  • • LVMPD does provide electronic fingerprint submission services for the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board. The fee is $29.00--cash only .
 • What kind of Identification is required?
  • • Acceptable identification is listed on the back of the work card application
  • • Two forms of identification are required; one of which must include a photograph.  
  • • All identification must be original documents (PHOTOCOPIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED).
Examples of acceptable identification are as follows: 
  • • State issued Driver’s License or State ID
  • • U.S. Passport
  • • Military ID
  • • DD214
  • • Naturalization Certificate
  • • Birth or Baptismal Certificate
  • • Social Security Card or INS authorization to work.
Persons born outside the U.S. or U.S. territory , including U.S. citizens born abroad, must show one of the following: 
  • • Naturalization Certificate
  • • U.S. Passport
  • • U.S. Birth Certificate 
  • • INS authorization to work. 
Persons 25 years of age and younger must show an original or certified copy of their birth certificate. No exceptions.
 
 • How do I renew my expired work card?
  • • You are required to re-apply. Obtain a work card application from your employer and follow the instructions on the back of the work card application. 
 • I was arrested as a juvenile.  Can I still get a work card?
  • • If you were 17 years of age or younger and you were convicted as a juvenile in Nevada, you are not required to disclose this information on your work card application.  
  • • Other states may consider juvenile acts as criminal acts and report that criminal history to the FBI.  
  • • If you’re unsure, you have the right to apply.  Your application will be reviewed by a technician at the time of your visit.  Whether or not you will be eligible for a work card is dependent upon the ordinance or statute that governs the position you are applying for.  You may have the right to appeal a denial.
 • If I have been convicted of a Felony/Gross Misdemeanor/Misdemeanor, can I obtain a work card?
  • • You have the right to apply.  Your application will be reviewed by a technician at the time of your visit. Whether or not you will be eligible for a work card is dependent upon the ordinance or statute that governs the position you are applying for.  You may have the right to appeal a denial.
 • How do I replace a lost or stolen work card?
  • • Obtain a new work card application from your employer and re-apply.  Standard work card fees will apply.
 • What do I do if I need a Gaming Card?
  • LVMPD no longer processes gaming cards, effective July 1, 2004.  Gaming employee registration is governed by the Nevada Gaming Control Board
  • LVMPD does provide electronic fingerprint submission services for the gaming employee registration process. The fee is $29.00--cash only.
 • If I have already been fingerprinted for a national background check, do I need to be fingerprinted again?
  • • Yes.  Fingerprints must be submitted to confirm your identity and obtain the most current information available.
 • Is a work card valid for more than one employment location?
  • • Your existing work card is valid only for the type of employment for which you originally obtained a work card.  Your new employer is required to complete a location change form and mail it to LVMPD within 5 days.
  • • If you are working in a different type of employment than your original work card, you must obtain an application from your new employer and re-apply.  Since each type of employment has different denial criteria, you may not qualify for all types of employment requiring a work card.
