The Blood Alcohol Unit receives specimens mainly from Driving Under the Influence (DUI) cases to determine the quantity of ethanol (common names include: alcohol, drinking alcohol, ethyl alcohol) present in an individual’s blood. The methodology utilized for this type of test is known as Headspace Gas Chromatography Analysis. If the blood alcohol result is less than 0.085 g/dL the specimen is subjected to drug screening.
The Drug Screen Unit screens for six classes of drugs by immunoassay. The lab uses two types of immunoassays, Enzyme-Multiplied Immunoassay Techniques (EMIT) and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).
Specimens that screen positive proceed to the Drug Confirmation Unit where drugs are identified and quantitated using a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS).
Toxicology analysis is requested using form LVMPD 547. If no tests for analysis are selected on the form, the incident will be used to determine what test(s) to complete. If the test requested does not match the sample submitted, the sample submitted will be analyzed. Contact the Laboratory if additional testing is required.
