- LVMPD HIRING STANDARDS
The LVMPD adheres to strict hiring standards when evaluating potential candidates for employment. These standards apply to anyone working with the LVMPD. They are reviewed annually by a hiring standards board to ensure the standards are clear and reflect the interests of the public. Board members include the Director of the Office of Human Resources, Professional Standards and Patrol Division Commanders, and the Internal Affairs Bureau Commander. Any changes to the standards are presented to the LVMPD Executive Staff for final approval.
Please carefully review the information listed below. These specific guidelines are provided in an effort to assist you with your decision concerning whether or not to submit your online employment application with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). Please be advised that the information listed below does not constitute all applicable hiring standards of this Department. The majority of the Department’s standards are confidential and not available for applicants or current employees to view.
You must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D. (General Educational Development) certificate. All other entry level requirements are measured during the selection process. Below are just some of the areas of your life history that will be examined by the LVMPD’s Internal Standards and Analysis Section (ISAS):
I. ARRESTS AND CONVICTIONS
- You will not be eligible for employment with the LVMPD if you have been convicted of:
- A felony crime, or a crime for which you would be required to register per Nevada law;
- Two (2) DUIs;
- Domestic Violence or Domestic Assault (any position which may require carrying a firearm).
- All other convictions will be reviewed and may be disqualifying.
II. DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE, INCLUDING DRUG SALES
NOTE: All applicants, including those applying for part-time or volunteer positions, will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
III. OTHER AREAS OF CONCERN
- Educational history
- Employment history
- Military history
- Driving history
- Financial history
- Criminal history/Involvement
- Truthfulness/Character issues
- Tattoos and/or branding/jewelry which would be exposed or visible while on duty, including gauged earlobes. (Such markings may not be covered with a bandage or make-up.)
IV. Applicants applying for full-time, permanent positions will be questioned by an ISAS Detective and required to pass a polygraph examination on all of the above areas. You may also be required to take a psychological examination.
V. Applicants applying for non-commissioned positions must also meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by the date of the first test instrument for the position to which they have applied.
- Applicants must be citizens/naturalized citizens or permanent resident aliens without conditions on status of the United States of America by the date of the first test instrument for the position to which they have applied.
- Applicants may not reapply for a position for which they have: 1) previously applied for within the last 90 days, and 2) failed any part of the selection process.
VI. Applicants applying for commissioned positions (Police Recruit or Corrections Recruit) must also meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the date of the first test instrument for the position to which they have applied.
- Visual acuity must be 20/20, or correctable to 20/20, with normal color, peripheral, and night vision. For applicants who wear hard lenses or who have worn soft lenses for less than 6 months, uncorrected far vision can be no worse than 20/40. Different standards apply to those who have worn soft lenses for over 6 months, and these can be obtained by contacting the Health Detail. Visual requirements also vary based on the position for which applicant applies.
- Applicants must be citizens of the United States of America by the date of the first test instrument for the position to which they have applied.
- Applicants must maintain physical condition necessary to perform the essential functions of the job as stated on the class specification.
