FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On April 25, 2026, at approximately 3:20 a.m., LVMPD Officer Alex Pena conducted a person stop on a male, later identified as 43-year-old Mitchell Nettles, near the intersection of West Harmon Avenue and South Arville Street. Nettles was observed exiting a nearby wash area wearing a black tactical vest. He continued across the street, just adjacent to a nearby casino hotel property. Officer Pena activated the lights on his patrol vehicle to conduct a person stop for trespassing.
Nettles immediately became confrontational with the officer and refused to identify himself. He also continued to act in a suspicious and adversarial manner, at which point Officer Pena attempted to place him into handcuffs. Upon attempting contact, Nettles became completely uncooperative and began running away. Officer Pena quickly gave chase, at which point Nettles reached into the back of his waistband and pulled out a firearm.
As he continued to run, he pointed a gun at Officer Pena. In response, the officer quickly drew his weapon and discharged six rounds toward Nettles.
The foot pursuit continued northbound on Arville Street and then west on Harmon Avenue. At some point, Officer Pena observed Nettles reaching into his tactical vest for what he believed to be weapons. Officer Pena engaged Nettles in three additional volleys of fire as the foot pursuit continued. Nettles was struck by gunfire but continued to flee. As additional officers arrived, they formulated an immediate action team and continued to give commands for Nettles to stop.
Seeing the suspect running toward a casino property, one of the officers deployed his low lethal shotgun and discharged it four times, striking Nettles. The suspect continued to disobey officers’ commands as he ran closer to the casino before shedding the tactical vest and being taken into custody.
Nettles was transported by medical personnel to a nearby hospital with non-life threating injuries. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center for Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Protected Person and Resisting a Public Officer with a Firearm amongst other charges.
An examination of this incident is being conducted by the LVMPD Critical Incident Review Team. This review focuses on policy, tactics, and training as it relates to this use of force.
