The technical conveniences of cell phones, computers, electronic payments, and digital currencies are embedded in nearly every aspect of modern life. While this connectivity has brought people and businesses closer together, it has also expanded the landscape for cybercrime.
Cybercriminals operate without borders, leveraging increasingly sophisticated tools to target organizations, businesses, and individuals across all industries and sectors.
The Cyber Investigative Group works in collaboration with the Las Vegas FBI Cyber Task Force to investigate network intrusions, business email compromises (BEC), and complex electronic crimes having a significant impact to the Las Vegas Valley.
What is the Cyber Investigative Group?
The Cyber Investigative Group (CIG) is a specialized subdivision within the Digital Technology Section of the Digital Investigations Bureau (DIB), operating under the Investigative Services Division. CIG is responsible for addressing cyber-related threats and crimes that impact departmental operations, critical infrastructure, and the community.
CIG operates in partnership with the Las Vegas FBI Cyber Task Force, facilitating information sharing and coordination through access to multiple 24/7 federal watch desks. These partnerships enhance CIG’s ability to respond rapidly to cyber incidents and complex digital investigations.
In support of its mission, CIG provides investigative assistance to LVMPD units, conducts cyber and digital investigations, and prepares cases for prosecution. Through these efforts, CIG works to strengthen and protect electronic systems and critical infrastructure across the department and the community.
Crimes Investigated by the Cyber Investigative Group
The Cyber Investigative Group (CIG) is responsible for investigating cyber-related crimes that involve network intrusions, including Business Email Compromise (BEC), ransomware attacks, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, remote desktop exploitation, spear-phishing–related account takeovers, and complex cryptocurrency-based crimes related to computer intrusion.
How to Report a Cybercrime
If you believe you have been the victim of an internet-related crime, or are reporting on behalf of someone else, you are encouraged to submit a complaint through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and file a police report.
