Victim: Samantha Angela Ainsworth, 18Samantha Angela Ainsworth
Suspect: Unknown
Location: Desert area near Hollywood Boulevard and the Las Vegas Water Treatment Date: Between December 4, 1985, and March 3, 1987

Synopsis: On December 3, 1985, at approximately 5:00 p.m., 18-year-old Samantha Ainsworth was last seen by her 16-year-old cousin in front of Sam's Town on Boulder Highway near Tropicana Avenue. According to her cousin, Ainsworth planned to hitchhike back to her residence in North Las Vegas. When she failed to arrive home, her family filed a missing persons report with the North Las Vegas Police Department.

On March 3, 1987, a witness riding a four-wheeler in a desert area near Hollywood Boulevard and the Las Vegas Water Treatment Plant, just south of Vegas Valley Drive, discovered what he believed to be human remains scattered throughout the area. LVMPD Patrol Officers responded and located the remains in a wash.

LVMPD Homicide Detectives responded to the scene and determined that what initially appeared to be a sinkhole was actually a shallow grave. After excavating the grave, detectives recovered a complete human skeleton.

The Clark County Coroner's Office examined the skeletal remains and determined they belonged to a White female between the ages of 16 and 20. Based on the depth of the grave and the condition of the remains, the Coroner concluded that the victim had been buried for more than one year.

Using that information, detectives reviewed missing persons cases involving White females between the ages of 16 and 20. The Clark County Coroner's Office later positively identified the remains as Samantha Ainsworth through dental records.

Security personnel noted the male was not wearing a shirt, which was against hotel policy, and made contact with him inside the restroom.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., the same security guards checked on the male again and observed him seated on the toilet in the same center stall. Medical personnel responded and pronounced him deceased.

Medical personnel and responding LVMPD Patrol Officers observed the male had several cuts and abrasions, though there was no active bleeding. Victim: John Ruzzene, 29
Suspect: Unknown
Location: Castaway Hotel and Casino Parking Lot
Date: Reported Missing- February 10, 1984 Recovered May 5, 1986

Synopsis: On February 10, 1984, at approximately 7:07 p.m., LVMPD Patrol Officers responded to the parking lot of the Castaways Hotel & Casino to take a missing person report for John Ruzzene. The person who contacted police was Ruzzene’s roommate and coworker. He stated Ruzzene had not returned home and had failed to report to work, which was out of character for him.

Ruzzene and the roommate were both employed by 7-UP. According to the roommate, Ruzzene lived a regimented lifestyle. He never missed work, always turned in his paperwork at the end of the workday, and would notify his roommate if he planned to be away from home. Concerned by his absence, the roommate began searching for him and located Ruzzene’s vehicle parked at the Castaways Hotel & Casino, which he found suspicious.

John Ruzzene

Ruzzene’s coworkers and girlfriend indicated there were no known problems at work or in his personal life. Detectives entered Ruzzene’s blue Volkswagen and recovered paperwork documenting his work route. His wallet was missing. Recovered documents indicated Ruzzene’s last known stop was at the Frontier Hotel and Casino, where he made contact with an employee at the back dock area at approximately 9:30 a.m. on February 10, 1984.

Detectives contacted Ruzzene’s family, friends, and ex-wife. Most reported last seeing or speaking with him a day or two before he went missing, and nothing appeared suspicious at that time. His ex-wife stated she last spoke with him on January 3, 1984.

Photographs of Ruzzene were circulated, and detectives obtained his dental records and dental x-rays.

On May 5, 1986, at approximately 9:10 a.m., LVMPD received a call from a male who reported discovering a human skull in a desert area approximately 3.1 miles south of State Route 160 (Blue Diamond Road) on Tecopa Hot Springs Highway, approximately 178 feet east of the roadway.

Homicide Detectives responded and conducted a search of the area, locating additional skeletal remains. The decedent was wearing a white shirt bearing a 7-UP logo and clothing consistent with that described in Ruzzene’s missing person report.

The Clark County Coroner conducted an autopsy and, utilizing the dental records obtained in 1984, positively identified the remains as John Ruzzene. The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
