The K-9 section of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department consists of 15 police officers, 3 police sergeants, and 17 working police dogs. These highly trained dogs, much like their human counterparts, are professionals in their field. Skilled in various tasks such as narcotics and explosive detection, as well as suspect location and apprehension, LVMPD K-9s play a crucial role in public safety.

While these remarkable animals may often be seen at community demonstrations, their primary role is to save lives. The LVMPD emphasizes the importance of respecting the dignity and liberty of all individuals and aims to minimize the use of force. Deploying a K-9 partner is a strategic decision made to locate, stop, and apprehend suspects who pose a threat to others. K-9s often persuade suspects to surrender, thus averting the need for officers to resort to deadly force.

Given the nature of their work, the bond between a police service dog and their handler is unbreakable. Typically, LVMPD K-9 officers remain paired with the same human partner throughout their career, even living together after retirement. Health care for retired LVMPD K-9s is generously provided by our community through the LVMPD Foundation.
