Police Chaplain Program

About the Program

LVMPD’s Police Chaplain Program began in December 2005 with five members of the local clergy who completed a specialized 30-hour training program. Police chaplains are volunteers assigned throughout the department, including area commands and specialized sections.

What Police Chaplains Do

Police chaplains are available 24 hours a day to offer comfort, guidance, spiritual support and a listening ear when employees or community members are affected by tragedy. They support all LVMPD employees and work with Peer Support to provide emotional and spiritual assistance for work-related and personal concerns.

Who Police Chaplains Support

The primary role of police chaplains is to support LVMPD employees. They may also assist community members during traumatic events, including victims of crime.

Police chaplains volunteer at least 20 hours each month. They may participate in patrol ride-alongs, attend briefings, graduations and special events, or visit department facilities.

Confidentiality

Conversations with police chaplains are confidential, except when disclosure is required by law or Department policy. Exceptions may include an immediate threat of harm to oneself or another person and information concerning abuse or neglect that must be reported.

Employees may ask a chaplain to explain the limits of confidentiality before beginning a conversation.
