Officer Ernest James May was the first Las Vegas police officer to die in the line of duty.
On June 8, 1933, Officer May responded to a report of an intoxicated man firing a gun at the Clark Auto Court on South 5th Street. Officer May was the first officer to arrive. The motel proprietor shot Officer May as he exited his patrol car. Officer May was 38 years old.
