Patrolman William R. Fortye
End of Watch: Friday, October 28, 1966
Officer William Robert Fortye joined the Las Vegas Police Department on October 10, 1961. On October 28, 1966, Officer Fortye radioed that he was stopping a northbound car on Highland Drive. Ten minutes later, he was dead. His assailant, in a savage struggle with the officer, had pulled Officer Fortye’s gun from its holster and shot him. Officer Fortye’s police dog, “Burgie,” attacked the suspect. Officer Fortye was 32.
