Diversity Awareness Training

LVMPD’s diversity training connects key concepts of cultural awareness to Metro’s ICARE values: Integrity, Courage, Accountability, Respect for People, and Excellence. These values guide employee behavior and interactions with the community.

The training focuses on building awareness, understanding differences, and improving communication. Topics include:

  • Diversity and cultural awareness
  • Recognizing personal reactions to differences
  • Understanding how bias can impact decision-making
  • Identifying similarities and differences among people

Assumptions and Bias

In the absence of complete information, people naturally make assumptions. While this is a normal process, assumptions are often influenced by personal bias. Recognizing these biases is critical to ensuring fair and effective interactions.

First Thoughts

Initial reactions can reveal underlying assumptions and biases. Being aware of these reactions helps employees ensure their decisions and actions align with LVMPD’s ICARE values.

Stereotypes

Stereotypes are generalized beliefs about groups of people. When left unexamined, they can influence behavior and decision-making.

  • Stereotypes can prevent objective thinking
  • They often develop from cultural assumptions
  • They can lead to distance, avoidance, or exclusion

What is Prejudice?

Prejudice refers to preconceived opinions or attitudes about others. When expressed through language or behavior, prejudice can lead to discrimination and harm interpersonal relationships.

What is Culture?

Culture has a very powerful influence on our behavior and thinking.

Culture is composed of some main categories: basic assumptions, values and philosophy, and artifacts. The most observable category of culture is behaviors and actions. It is easy and human to make comparisons between people from different cultures. The problem is not the comparison, it is the tendency to judge other cultural norms in a less favorable light.

Examples of Cultural Groups

The following are examples of cultural groups commonly referenced in diversity discussions:

  • African Americans (Black American)
  • Arabs/Muslims
  • Asian
  • Caucasian (White American)
  • Gay/Lesbian/Transgender
  • Hispanic/Latino/Latinx

Language Differences

Individuals may encounter situations where English is not a person’s first language. Being patient and mindful of communication differences is important for effective interaction.

Applying the Training

Employees are encouraged to apply these concepts in their daily interactions. The goal is to strengthen communication, build trust, and improve service within a diverse community.
