1 October

On October 1st, 2017, Stephen Paddock opened fire from his hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino onto the crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival. Paddock fired thousands of rounds, killing 60 people and injuring hundreds more in what became the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) patrol officers, SWAT, and other first responders immediately converged on the scene, rescuing victims and directing concertgoers to safety under active fire. Officers later breached Paddock’s hotel room, where he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The LVMPD Homicide Section, in coordination with local, state, and federal partners, conducted the investigation into the murders of 60 victims.

UNLV Shooting Dec. 6, 2023

On December 6^th, 2023, Anthony Polito, entered the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) and opened fire in Frank and Estella Beam Hall. He shot four faculty members, resulting in three deaths. University Police (UPD) and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police (LVMPD) were among the first responders. As Polito exited Beam Hall, two UPD officers engaged him in a gunfight. Polito died on the scene.

The LVMPD Homicide Section conducted the investigation into the deaths of Patricia Navarro-Velez, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang and Naoko Takemaru. LVMPD is releasing its final investigative report.

Shane Tamura, Manhattan, New York Shooter - Records

On July 28, 2025, Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, entered 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan and opened fire inside the lobby of the high-rise office building. Armed with an M4-style semi-automatic rifle, Tamura killed four people and critically injured another before making his way to the 33rd floor, where he died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victims included an off-duty NYPD officer working security and multiple building employees.

While the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was not involved in the incident, Tamura previously resided in Las Vegas and had prior contact with law enforcement. Due to the high public interest, LVMPD is releasing available public records related to Tamura.

LVMPD records show Tamura was the subject of two mental health crisis interventions under Nevada law (NRS 433A.115, et seq.)—one in 2022 and another in 2024. He was also arrested for trespassing at a Las Vegas Casino in 2023 and cited for a traffic violation in 2024. These records, which would typically be withheld due to privacy protections, are being released in light of the extraordinary circumstances.

LVMPD is making these records available at no charge.

Prince Law Group Shooting Apr. 8, 2024

On April 8, 2024, Joseph Houston entered the Prince Law Group offices on the fifth floor of the City National Bank Building, located at 10801 W. Charleston Blvd., and opened fire during a child-custody deposition.

At 10:04 a.m., LVMPD received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting the shooting. Callers stated the incident occurred in a conference room. Responding officers arrived within minutes and made their way to the fifth floor.

Houston shot and killed attorney Dennis Prince and his wife, Ashley Prince, before dying by suicide. Seven individuals were present in the conference room; others were able to escape.

The LVMPD Homicide Section conducted the investigation into the deaths of Dennis and Ashley Prince. LVMPD has released its final investigative report.

Cybertruck explosion Jan. 1, 2025

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has released the after-action report on the Tesla Cybertruck explosion that occurred January 1, 2025, at the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas.

This report provides a comprehensive review of the LVMPD’s response to the incident with the goal of strengthening future preparedness, response efforts and identifying opportunities for improvement.

The report not only highlights the strengths of LVMPD’s response to the Cybertruck explosion but also serves as a critical tool for continuous advancement. The coordinated efforts of local, federal and private-sector partners were essential in mitigating the immediate threat and preserving public safety during the incident.

By implementing the outlined recommendations in the report and reinforcing key areas such as officer safety, resource management, communication, policy and training, and the incorporation of vital technology, LVMPD and its partners will be better prepared to manage future critical incidents.
