Vegas SafeCam - Community Video Sharing Registration Program
The Vegas SafeCam program strengthens our partnership with the community by enhancing communication and service. Citizen participation plays a crucial role in deterring crime, identifying suspects, and supporting proactive crime-fighting efforts. This voluntary program allows investigators to contact community members if privately owned video footage could help solve a crime. Participation is free, your information remains confidential, and you can unregister at any time. Join us in making our community safer through collaboration and vigilance.
Similar programs have been implemented by other agencies nationwide. The registration process is straightforward, entirely voluntary, and now accessible to current Las Vegas residents.
Residents and businesses of Henderson can register their cameras with the Henderson Police Department's C.A.P.T.U.R.E. - community video surveillance program.
How it Works
A homeowner or business owner installs a surveillance system on their property. While serving as a deterrent, the system does not prevent all crime. Often, it captures valuable footage for the police department, which may go unnoticed by the owner. Our program broadens the scope of potential leads for crimes in your area. Vegas SafeCam provides both you and the LVMPD an opportunity to capture perpetrators arriving, departing, or actively engaging in criminal activity.
For instance: You, a new homeowner, have recently installed a home surveillance system and registered it with the LVMPD. Weeks later, a patrol officer visits your home, informing you of a recent burglary in your neighborhood. Utilizing the program's database, the officer has arrived at your residence for further investigation. Requesting your assistance, the officer asks if you could review your surveillance footage during the specified time of the incident. Upon review, you identify a suspicious vehicle potentially linked to the crime. This information is relayed to patrol officers and detectives handling the case. Subsequently, a patrol officer halts a vehicle matching the description, uncovering evidence linking it to the neighborhood crime. Without your surveillance footage, the suspect's swift apprehension would not have been possible, potentially averting further criminal activity in the area.
This is only one example of how this program would work. There are endless opportunities with this program to make a difference in our community.
Peace of mind
During the registration process, we do not request vital information or access your surveillance system. Your information is accessible only to police officers for official investigations. Required details include your name, address, telephone number, and camera locations. Subsequently, two actions occur: if a crime occurs in your vicinity, a police officer contacts you to explore potential leads; alternatively, if you observe something suspicious, you can contact the LVMPD for an officer to visit your property. Collaboration between you and the officer facilitates crime-solving efforts in your area.
